One of the most praised parts of Baldur's Gate 3's gameplay is its rewarding romance system, where not only can you romance your favorite companion, but also romance two if you do it correctly. From early on in Act One, all the way into Act Three, you'll be able to pursue a relationship with any of the companions that join your party over the course of the game, aside from Minsc and Jaheira. You can't introduce polyamory to your game until later on, as it'll take some trust built up between yourself and your original partner first.

You can choose to romance any of the main companions, and romancing them each takes a bit of a different effort. The main thing to remember is to make choices that you think align with their character. For instance, in order to romance Karlach, players should always take the chance to be a hero, as Karlach's past as a soldier informs her present-day desire to always do good. Not every companion will be okay with you taking another lover, though, so you'll want to check with them first before you go gallivanting under the sheets with someone else.

Of all the companions in BG3, only two of them will always force you to choose. Wyll and Gale both confront you if you try to romance another character while committed to them, giving you an ultimatum that either you choose them, or end your relationship entirely. As for the others, it's a bit more complicated. Here's each romance's path, and when each character is/isn't okay with polyamory.

Shadowheart	Fine with it, as long as it isn't with Lae'zel.	She will ask you to become exclusive or break things off.	Exclusive only.
Astarion	Fine with it, reluctant to share you with Shadowheart.	Fine with Halsin and Minthara, but you'll need to have a conversation first.	Fine with Halsin and Minthara
Karlach	Fine with it.	Once her Infernal Engine is fixed, and you can be physical, she'll ask to be exclusive.	Exclusive only.
Minthara and Halsin	Fine with it, as long as they get along with the other person.

Generally, all of the companions are okay with you having another partner at the beginning of the game. Whether this is because they don't really care about you yet, or because your relationship just isn't that serious, most of them will ask to become exclusive sometime during Act Two as your relationship deepens. The only exception to this is Astarion with Halsin or Minthara, which takes a bit of a conversation before you can move forward.

How To Romance More Than One Partner

This Is Pretty Easy In Act One, But Act Two Is When It Gets Serious

As you can see from the chart above, most of the companions are fine with you having more romantic partners during Act One, but they'll start to ask for commitment in Act Two. This really comes to light if you enter Act Two with Halsin at your side. The slight flirtation he exhibits at the Tiefling party comes out full force, and if you flirt back, your partner will likely have something to say about it.

Almost as soon as you pick Halsin up, he'll begin making not-so-subtle passes at you, much to some players' chagrin. This makes Halsin's romance one of the easiest in BG3, so it'll come as no surprise when he finally propositions you in Act Two.

You can choose to break up with your current partner, sure, but if you're romancing Astarion, there's no need to break up with him.
