BG3 Wyll Romance Guide (2024)

When first meeting Wyll in Baldur's Gate III, one couldn't be blamed for thinking that he is a paladin. Yet, starting his introduction scene with him casting an Eldritch Blast, the signature spell of warlocks, makes it clear that he is someone far more interesting. Wyll may be a good man, but people with warlock pacts are often tangled up in a complicated situation that leaves them seemingly no choice but to maintain their morals in the face of their commitments. As such, Wyll is already a fascinating character with a compelling dilemma.

This also makes him one of the more interesting romances in the game, as his ultimate gate can affect where the player ends up following the final boss fight. At the same time, the romance with Wyll proceeds organically, and in many ways is idealized and as close to a fairytale as one could hope for from a world as dangerous as Faerun. To get Wyll's ideal endings though, players will need to understand the timing regarding important moments in his journey during the game.

Meet the Party's Resident Warlock in Act I

The Deal from Hell

• The player can meet Wyll in the Emerald Grove and help him in his assigned mission.
• They can later comfort him when he is transformed into a devil by his patron.

Players first meet Wyll when he comes to their assistance with a pack of goblins attacking the gates of the Emerald Grove. After the fight, Wyll can meet the player inside the Grove, where he is teaching Tiefling children self-defense. Right from the outset, Wyll proves himself to be heroic, brave, and kind-hearted. All qualities that any player character would find attractive unless they were determined to be evil. Of course, playing an evil character means that Wyll won't pursue a romantic relationship with the player. The key to earning his affection is to be selfless and to help him find the correct path in the darkest moments.

He will also ask the players to assist him in hunting down a servant of Zariel named Karlach. This can inadvertently lead players to their barbarian companion, but upon meeting her, it becomes clear that she is not the monster Wyll initially assumed her to be. After helping him accept this, Wyll realizes that he was lied to. Despite knowing the consequences, Wyll decided to spare Karlach and she could potentially join the party at that point, developing a special friendship with Wyll. Of course, it is the player who is beginning to bond with Wyll in this playthrough, and they just helped him stay true to himself.

Unfortunately, doing so means that Wyll's patron, a devil named Mizroa, will appear in camp to punish Wyll for his disobedience. She alters his physical form, irreversibly transforming him into a devil. Though dismayed at how he now looks, the player can comfort him in this moment, telling him his appearance does nothing to change who he is, or even make a comedic attempt to flirt that his new form is still very handsome. Regardless of how the player proceeds, being there for Wyll alleviates some of his pain and increases his favorable opinion of the player.

Wyll's Past Catches Up to Him

The next major development in Wyll's story comes from a seemingly random encounter in the northern section of the map. Discovering a burning building, if players are quick enough they can rescue the people inside, one of whom is Councilor Florrick, an old friend of Wyll's and a colleague of his father. Upon rescuing her, and if Wyll is in the party, they can learn that Wyll is the son of Duke Ulder Ravengard of Baldur's Gate, the city's most prominent leader. This new information leads to the revelation that Wyll's father has been kidnapped, unlocking a quest to find the duke and help Wyll save his father.

Back at camp, Wyll can be more open about his past, revealing that his father was disappointed in Wyll for seemingly selling his soul. Wyll still has a difficult time explaining what happened to make him sign his soul away to Mizora, but he is beginning to open up to the player about the darker moments in his past — a definite sign that true trust is developing between the two. At this stage, it won't be until Act II that the player can follow up on Wyll's missing father, but the seeds to continue the romance have been planted.

Later, during the camp celebration over the goblins' defeat, Wyll isolates himself from the group. He believes that his new form disturbs the refugees and other inhabitants of the Emerald Grove. This is an irony since half the inhabitants were tieflings, but Wyll's sorrow at being seen as a monster are what matters here. The player can comfort Wyll, stating how they noticed his absence and want him to rejoin the party. Wyll will refuse, but if the player succeeds a persuasion check on him, they can sneak in a kiss, cementing the romantic path with him. They can then go to sleep, dreaming of their warlock companion.

Act II Provides the Player and Wyll Some Intimiate Moments

Taking Things a Step Further

• Players can dance with Wyll, cementing a relationship with him.
• They can then negotiate for his freedom from his pact.
• Wyll later discovers that his father is being controlled by the Cult of the Absolute.

Upon entering the Shadow Cursed Land, Wyll's romance will continue, though perhaps not exactly in the way that players expected. Though he is known for hunting demons and has taken down a goblin or two in his time, Wyll was also raised as a noble, and this side of him makes itself known when, during a long rest cutscene, players can find him practicing dance steps. If Wyll is interested, he invites the player to join him in practicing. They can impress him with their skills if they succeed on different types of saving throws, but the real meat of this scene is when Wyll invites them for a more intimate dance.

In that moment, the players can have their next kiss, but it will go no further than that. Wyll, ever the gentleman, states that while he is sorely tempted by their presence, he wants their relationship to be something truly romantic, not just based purely on passion, but on genuine affection. He wants a relationship with the player to be like a fairytale or something sung about by bards. This isn't just some childish whim though, Wyll genuinely wants to give the player the kind of courtship he believes they deserve. So, the two put off any further developments in their relationship until the time is right, but at this stage, they are officially in a relationship.

Following this, Mizora makes a reappearance, only this time the shoe is on the other foot. Calling for Wyll's aid once more, she demands he free a devil in the captivity of the game's main antagonists: the Cult of the Absolute. An insightful enough player will recognize that there is a hint of desperation in Mizora's voice and can use this to leverage Wyll's contract being ended if he follows through on this deal. If they make a successful check, they can persuade Mizora to swear to do this so long as they free the devil first. Wyll is dumbfounded by this turn of events, but grateful for the player seizing the initiative and finding a way out of the deal for him.

Wyll's Past Comes Back to Haunt Everyone

In a twist of fate, both Wyll's father and his current target, end up being in the same place. After forcing Ketheric Thorm, the cult's regional leader, to retreat into a Mindflayer colony, the party will discover that the devil Wyll had to free was Mizora herself, who was taken captive. Players must choose to release Mizora. They will be presented with the option to kill her, but this will only result in losing Wyll as a companion permanently. Freeing her does guarantee that she will release Wyll in six months.

Using the tedious legalese of the contract, Mizora binds Wyll's service for another six months, but promises to release him at the end of its term or if he manages to help destroy the Absolute before then. Though annoyed by her continued manipulations, Wyll is relieved to see a light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, that light is quickly snuffed out by the next surprise in the colony: what became of his father.

Ulder Ravengard is alive and leave the colony in one piece, but he is carrying a passenger along with him. While spying on the cult's leaders, they watch as the duke is infected with a mindflayer tadpole, much like the rest of the part was. Unlike them, Ulder was quickly brainwashed by the Absolute and forced to serve the cult's needs. Wyll is dismayed by this if he is there in person, but he quickly resolves to free his father from the cult's control.

Settling Things With Wyll's Father

• Wyll can rescue his father and permanently sell his soul or abandon him and be free.
• There is a third option where Wyll can save his father and his freedom.
• From there, he can decide what he wants to do with his future.

Upon arriving in Baldur's Gate, players will need to make some very precisely timed decisions if they want to get Wyll's ideal ending. Once they reach the gates to the city, they will be invited to witness the coronation of Enver Gortash as he is made Grand Duke of Baludr's Gate, with the brainwashed blessing of Duke Ulder. Once the ceremony is complete, Mizora will appear and offer Wyll a choice: He can either agree to renew the contract for the rest of his life and she will tell him where to find and rescue his father, or can choose to let his father rot and be free of the contract. The player can influence Wyll's decision here, either advocating for his freedom or agreeing that he should rescue his father.

Of course, there is a third option here that is a little difficult to snag. Players can just outright ignore the coronation of Gortash until it suits them. This gives them time to explore the city and more importantly, the questline of the Ironhand Gnomes, leading them to the secret underwater prison where Gortash keeps his hostages. Before players descend below the waves to free the prisoners, they must first attend the coronation. Once it is over, take a long rest, and when the players enter the prison, they learn that Duke Ulder is there in one of the cells.

This means that players don't need to take Mizora's deal to find Wyll's father. They can advocate for Wyll to claim his freedom, he'll only need to grapple with the guilt for one night before they actually find his father and free him. Granted, this means that escaping the prison will be made more difficult by an irate Mizora, who is not happy to have lost the literal battle for Wyll's soul and tries to kill Ulder with exploding demon spiders out of spite. If players are careful and prepared enough, Ulder can survive the encounter and reunite with Wyll. However that leads to another moment in Wyll's journey.

The Possible Futures of Wyll

The player participates in the meeting between Wyll and his no longer mind-controlled father. At first, the two are at odds, with Ulder refusing to acknowledge his son's actions. It isn't until the player intervenes that Ulder realizes how unfair he has been to Wyll and the two reconcile, with Ulder realizing his son was a far greater man than even he could have dreamed. Wyll can then decide what his future will look like. He can either take up the mantle of future Duke of Baldur's Gate, or he could choose to continue being a shield for those in need, renaming himself the Blade of Avernus.

On a more personal note, a romantic scene will occur between Wyll and the player where he takes them to the Wilden Oak, an ancient tree where he has setup a romantic candlelit scene for them. There he elaborates a bit more on his past before saying that he wants to be with the player in all things, getting down on one knee to propose to them. Players can accept or refuse, but logically they will say yes, and the first intimate scene between them and Wyll occurs.

Near the game's finale, two endings for Wyll can occur. The first, provided he chooses to become a duke, is that he remains in Baldur's Gate and leads the rebuilding efforts, accompanied by the player as his partner in everything. The second follows the Blade of Avernus route. At this stage, Karlach's infernal engine will be overloading and the only way to save her life would be to travel to Avernus. Wyll can offer to accompany her so she will not be alone. The player can join them both, not wanting to be separated from Wyll, leading the trio to take on the devil and demon armies together.

The epilogue party does reveal that they do well in the Hells and have a chance to come home permanently if they can find a new infernal engine design for Karlach. Overall though, Wyll is satisfied with his life's choices, and even happier if the player stands by him throughout all of it.
