I think sometimes in life, there are moments that define us – something in your brain goes off and you want to change things that just weren’t working before.
I had two of these moments and they both rewired my brain dramatically – today’s post on life-changing get to know yourself questions is based on these personal experiences.
This is How I Got to Know Myself Better
I started asking myself a lot of questions after two main events – here’s a brief recap.
Event #1: a 6 Letter Word
When I was 23 years old, I was told that high-dysphasia pre-cancerous cells were found in my body.
Now, obviously this isn’t nearly as life-threatening as a cancer diagnosis itself, but no one wants to hear the word cancer associated with their health by any means.
At the time, I was working in the film industry alongside my husband.
The first thing you should know about the film industry is that the hours don’t leave a lot of time to have a real life – when you work between 12 to 15 hours a day, five days a week, there’s hardly time to go grocery shopping never mind making plans with loved ones!
Thinking about how short life is still makes me uncomfortable but after this news (and ongoing checkups for about 6 years), I really began to evaluate what matters most to me.
My husband, parents, sister, extended family, and friends were it so, I knew I had to make a change.
God-willing, we also wanted to start a family one day if my health improved.
Event #2: New Life
When I held my daughter for the first time – everything changed.
I was a different person before and after I gave birth.
No more low self-esteem. No more over-analyzing. No more excuses. No more tolerance for unwelcome opinions.
More self-love. More self-acceptance.
For me, having a child means that nothing else matters – her well-being, development, and safety are my priorities.
Once you become a mother, pettiness and negativity just don’t have a place in your life – and learning to let go of toxic habits and people is essential to being the best mom you can be.
